Nina Simone : Why? (The King Of Love Is Dead)

Le 4 Avril 1968, Martin Luther King est assassiné à Memphis, Tennessee. Effondré, le contrebassiste Gene Taylor, qui joue à l’époque avec Nina Simone, écrit la chanson « Why? (The King Of Love Is Dead) », ce sera une des seules compositions de toute sa carrière, mais elle est immortelle.

En concert à Westbury trois jours après la mort du révérend, Nina Simone et Gene Taylor vont jouer pour la première fois ce morceau, appris en quelques heures. Cette toute première version figure sur l’album live « Nuff Said! », sorti la même année. Par la suite, Nina rejouera cette grande chanson encore et encore et, puisqu’il n’en existe aucune version studio, elle la modifiera des dizaines de fois, changeant le texte, la structure, la faisant durer, interpellant le public en plein morceau…

Nina Simone fut bouleversée par la mort de Martin Luther King, elle était pourtant une des premières à le critiquer. Pour elle, le pacifisme ne menait à rien et le pasteur était beaucoup trop « gentil », elle penchait nettement plus du côté de Malcolm X et des Black Panthers. Pourtant, au même titre que Gene Taylor, elle ne pouvait comprendre pourquoi on avait assassiné un homme si pacifique, et son regard sur les Etats-Unis a encore dû se durcir après ça.

Ses interprétations de ce morceau, surnommé « the saddest song ever written » (« la chanson la plus triste jamais écrite »), sont d’une intensité incroyable et on peut ressentir toute la douleur, toute la tristesse, de Nina Simone qui se demande réellement « Why? », pourquoi ? Et que va-t-il se passer maintenant qu’ils ont tué le Roi de l’Amour ?
